A group of Year 7 Taieri College pupils has created some Christmas cheer for disadvantaged children.

The pupils from class 7NJ decided to get involved with Operation Christmas Child, an international project organised by Samaritan's Purse and aimed at providing gifts for children in need.

Operation Christmas Child began in 1993 and more than 100 million shoeboxes full of gifts have been given to children in more than 130 countries.

''As a class we were amazed at the number of children throughout the world who do not receive any gifts at all,'' teacher John Mr Nicholl said.

The pupils brought shoeboxes to school and filled them with gifts, for either a boy or girl.

''We all enjoyed being part of helping others in our world. We also discovered just how fortunate we are in this wonderful country.

''It is nice to give something back at this time of the year,'' Mr Nicholl said.
