Event co-ordinator Matt Black said it was the third time the race had been held in Dunedin.
The first two raised money to fund a children's athletics co-ordinator.
Mr Black said an additional fund was established with proceeds from this year's race which would assist teenage athletes by providing money to attend national championships or buy equipment.
The winner, Daniel Balchin (23), of Christchurch, crossed the finishing line at St Clair in 32min 45sec, lowering the course record by 21sec.
The fastest female was Lesley van Miert (29), of the Netherlands, who finished in 37min 23sec and bettered the women's mark by 43sec.
