Reworked ads should sound good

If university marketers decide to rearrange and rerecord music for a university advertisement, what better way to do it than to employ and show off the talent of the university's music department and students.

First year University of Otago student and singer Olivia Canny recorded a solo for the TV version of the advert, while music department tutor David Harrison teamed up with the Southern Sinfonia for a longer version to be played in cinemas.

Video footage of the orchestra, along with the musicians and singers from the music department, is now interspersed throughout the two reworked advertisements.

Senior lecturer in contemporary rock music Dr Graeme Downes said the department had "a pretty good pool of voices, engineering talent, equipment and ability".

"For me personally, it is always fun being asked to arrange a rock song for orchestra. It is a challenge to bring the two worlds together."

The recording had given students a valuable opportunity to work in a real studio environment with other professionals, he said.

Head of marketing services Ruth Mackenzie-White said everybody had pitched in to do the recording and it was an "almost perfect project to show what we can do here".
