A crew of five came from Christchurch to start the job about five weeks ago, when extra hands were required for the labour-intensive work of hanging the mesh.
On the ground yesterday, third staff member Kenny Dalrymple, said the workers were likely to remain on site until the end of October.
The abseilers were hanging double twist wire mesh netting over the rock face to stop rock falling on to the private road below, he said.
The holes that were drilled would be used to secure the mesh to the rock face.

Mr Dalrymple said the views from the site were good.
"The guys that have got houses there, they’re kind of spoiled, to be honest.
"They’ve got really, really, really nice views."
