The swift rise of Highlanders lock Jarrad Hoeata into the All Blacks shows what can be done when a player gets focused and knows where he is going, says coach Jamie Joseph.

Hoeata (27), who played every game for the Highlanders this year, was the only new cap in the All Black squad named for the Tri-Nations tournament yesterday.

Joseph, who made Hoeata one of his first signings when he became coach of the southern franchise last year, said the Taranaki forward had come a long way in a year.

"He was getting just a few games for the Chiefs and then joined up with the Maori. It just shows what can be done when a guy gets a focus, knows what he has to do and goes about his work," Joseph said.

"What I saw was what I think the All Black selectors have seen.

"He's got a great attitude, is a very determined player and is also a very good athlete.

"He may not be the tallest guy but he is a good lineout forward. He was one of our biggest lineout winners for us and we had one of the best lineouts in the competition."

Hoeata has been picked for the All Blacks purely as a lock and the selectors indicated yesterday he was seen as a replacement for the Japan-bound Brad Thorn.

All Black coach Graham Henry offered his congratulations to Hoeata yesterday. "He is the only new All Black selected so this will be a very special moment for him. He thoroughly deserves his selection." Hoeata, who before this season had played just five Super rugby games, effectively replaces Highlanders team-mate Tom Donnelly, who did not make the 30-man squad.

Donnelly, who has played 15 tests, had a limited run for the Highlanders this season, and will be back playing for Otago this month.

Highlanders and Otago loose forward Adam Thomson returns to the All Blacks after a 12-month absence. Strong form in the Super 15 meant he was too hard to leave out. Highlanders halfback Jimmy Cowan retains his place in the squad.

Highlanders and Otago fullback Ben Smith did not make the 30-man squad but is one of four players who have been named as injury cover and will join the squad in the initial stages.

He will cover for the likes of injured fullback Israel Dagg, winger Hosea Gear, and utility Isaia Toeava.
