Runners show their colours

It started on a whim and ended with a barrage of rainbow-coloured corn starch.

About 1200 people of all ages took to Logan Park yesterday for the Sport Otago Rainbow Run.

Those taking part walked or ran a 5km circuit around Logan Park, passing volunteers hurling handfuls of coloured corn starch as they went.

Among them was Margot Darling (17), from Dunedin, who said taking part was a spur-of-the-moment decision.

"We decided 20 minutes before the race we would do it. We were sitting at home doing nothing," she said.

"It was fun," she said, her shirt a patchwork of vivid colours.

Sport Otago business development manager Aaron Joy said numbers at yesterday’s event were "miles up on last year", which was pleasing.

The event promoted healthy participation in sport and was a fundraiser for Sporting Chance, a programme providing financial assistance to disadvantaged children wanting to take part in sport.

The corn starch lobbed at participants was non-toxic and washed off easily, he said.

"People love it — [it’s] a great excuse to get dirty and healthy at the same time."
