A rainfall total in South Dunedin during the weekend storm almost 70mm lower than Mosgiel's, which is just 6km away, saved the suburb from serious flooding at the weekend.

South Dunedin was badly flooded in 2015, and before the weekend Dunedin City Council contractors swept gutters and checked mud tanks in low-lying areas as a precaution.

But the suburb, despite manholes covers being lifted by water, was not subject to major flooding.

Rainfall in Musselburgh between noon on Friday and noon on Saturday was recorded at 93mm, while in Mosgiel, close to where the flooding was at its worst, the level was 160mm.

Dunedin City Council strategy and governance general manager Sandy Graham said infrastructure in South Dunedin "coped as would be expected''.

Teams had been to the suburb yesterday to again check mud tanks and culverts, and those were all in good order, bar "key ones that we know are prone to blocking''.

It was not just the amount of rain that fell which affected the system, but also its intensity, Ms Graham said.

"The challenge in 2015 was a lot of rain fell in a slightly shorter period of time.''

While DCC should be given some thanks on doing their job this time, this does prove that the 2015 floods were, at a minimum, exacerbated by DCC failures.
Lets hope future weather events are as well forecast as last weeks and DCC continue to remember their past mistakes.
