Salmon release in Leith aims to improve stocks

Phil Elliot helps release about 2000 1-year-old salmon from a water tanker into the Leith River, near Woodhaugh Gardens, in Dunedin on Saturday.

Dunedin Community Salmon Trust chairman Steve Bennett said the salmon were grown from broodstock at the Sawyers Bay Hatchery, and schools were released into Otago Harbour about three times each year.

Saturday’s release follows a release in April.  There will be a third release  next month.

The releases are part of the trust’s aim to improve salmon breeding and stocks in Otago Harbour.
