``You can do it'' is the mantra Balaclava School pupils are shouting as they prepare to take part in the Cans for Good national can collection next week.

They will be joined by Alexandra School, Clyde School, Clyde Playcentre, Kaikorai Primary School, Green Island School, Kingsview School (Queenstown) and about 200 others nationwide, to collect cans of food to help struggling families.

The Salvation Army has teamed up with Wattie's in a bid to restock foodbank shelves before Christmas.

Salvation Army social services head Pam Waugh said the organisation's foodbanks around the country were running low on stock and there was a higher demand for its services.

``Already this year we have seen almost an 11% increase [in demand] for food parcels from the previous year.''

From October 30 to November 3, all the cans collected by schools and early childhood education centres around New Zealand would be given to the Salvation Army for use in local foodbanks.

She said it was the second year of the campaign which combines collecting for charity with a creative competition and teaching resources designed to engage children and teachers, in a fun, team-based giving and learning experience.

Last year, the Salvation Army provided more than 58,000 food parcels to help families in need get back on their feet.
