The Southern District Health Board yesterday launched a campaign aimed at getting people out of their beds.

Rather than being a waiting list-cutting exercise, the "#EndPJParalysis 70-day challenge" has a serious clinical aim.

"Bed rest in hospital leads to muscle wasting, and this can cause serious harm including reduced mobility and loss of strength leading to a risk of falls," SDHB chief nursing officer Jane Wilson said.

"We need to encourage and reassure patients that it is OK to wear clothes and walk around.

"A patient's time is valuable, especially for our elderly patients, as figures show nearly half of people aged over 85 die within one year of a hospital admission."

The new campaign is running alongside other initiatives aimed to allow older people to live at home including "Home as my First Choice" and "Live Stronger for Longer".
