Sentence due over Oamaru girl's crash death

A Chinese tourist is due to be sentenced at Dunedin District Court today, following a car crash in which a five-year-old girl was killed.

Jing Cao, 32, is due to be sentenced today, following a car crash in February which killed five-year-old Oamaru girl Ruby Jay Marris.

Cao said he was tired at the time he crossed the centre line on State Highway 1 in his rented four-wheel-drive and smashed into the Marris family's station wagon near Moeraki on February 21.

The crash, killed Ruby and put the rest of her family in hospital.

Cao had travelled to Moeraki after arriving in Auckland on February 17, with his partner and parents.

Cao previously pleaded guilty to one charge of dangerous driving causing death and five charges of dangerous driving causing injury.

At his last appearance in court, Judge Kevin Phillips warned Cao imprisonment was likely and he should "prepare himself accordingly".
