Severe gales, rain forecast for South

Otago and Southland residents are being warned to brace for severe gales and more heavy rain.

A MetService spokeswoman said a ridge of high pressure was expected to move east over the country on Sunday, and a northwest flow to develop over the South Island ahead of an incoming front.

The front and associated low were expected to pass east over the South Island on Monday, bringing a high risk of rainfall accumulations reaching warning amounts in Fiordland and southern Westland, from late Sunday to Monday, she said.

Strong north to northwesterlies were expected across the South Island, with the possibility of severe gales reaching more than 90kmh around inland parts of Canterbury, Otago and Southland on Sunday.

Colder southerlies were expected around the lower South Island on Tuesday, bringing steady rain to Southland and Otago.

There is a possibility rainfall accumulations could reach warning amounts about Southland and Clutha on Tuesday,'' she said.
