Dunedin's "speed dating" event for students to secure internships at local businesses is about to return.

The annual Sexy Summer Jobs event will be held  at  Otago Polytechnic next Wednesday.

Enterprise Dunedin business development adviser Chanel O’Brien said the programme met business needs, created high-value jobs, retained skills and talent in the city and contributed to its economic growth.

Since 2009, 93 businesses had been involved in the programme, and 318 internships had resulted in 216 positions, she said. While the programme started with an ICT focus, it had gone on to attract a wide range of sectors. At next week’s event, representatives of small and medium-sized businesses from sectors including ICT, biotech,  health technologies, education,  research, engineering and niche manufacturing would be able to meet students from the University of Otago and  polytechnic to find potential interns.

"Businesses use the programme to reduce the commercial risk in taking on an untried person," Ms O’Brien said.

"It provides the opportunity for market and product development which might not otherwise happen," she said.
