Possum causes power outage on Otago Peninsula

A power outage in Portobello, Taiaroa Head and Harwood was caused by a possum making contact with the line, Aurora Energy says.

Power has been out since 4.50pm yesterday and is not due to be restored until 2pm today.

A spokesman said about 430 customers were affected.

“Fault crews attended and immediately made the area safe. Due to high winds and wet weather it was unsafe for our crews to continue working through the night to restore power.

“Crews have returned to site this morning and are working to restore power to customers by late afternoon, " he said.

“We would like to thank affected customers for their understanding, we know it’s an inconvenience when the power goes out, especially in the cold weather.”

It advised people to stay clear of fallen power lines or damaged electrical equipment.
