Aerial platform used to tackle chimney fire

Firefighters were called out with an aerial appliance to tackle a chimney fire in the Dunedin suburb of Vauxhall this morning.

Crews were called to the incident in Braeburn St about 10.25am.

Two fire appliances attended, including one with an aerial platform, as the chimney was too high to fight the fire from the inside.

The householder, who did not want to be named, said there was no damage to the house.

It was "a bit of excitement" on  a Sunday morning, he said.

He understood the fire was caused by a blockage in the chimney flu.

"It's all good," he said.

St Kilda station chief Phillip De Rooy said the blaze was a "standard chimney fire" but the steep clay tiles on the roof made it necessary to use the aerial appliance.
