TQ racing drivers (from left) Mark Alexander, Shane Phillips and Tom Lumsden reach speeds of about 130kmh as they race around the track at Beachlands Speedway last night.

About 1000 spectators gathered - not including those who sat in the cheap seats in the sand hills outside - to watch the Christchurch TQ Club Tri-Nations Series, which attracted drivers from Australia and the United States.

The event was the third round of the tri-series which featured some of the world's best TQ (three-quarter) midget car drivers. Other events included quarter midget car races, for drivers aged between 8 and 15, six-shooter V6 sprint car races, street stocks and saloons.
