Port Chalmers police are advising residents to be vigilant and lock their cars after a spate of petrol thefts and thefts from cars, many of which were unlocked.
Senior Constable Lindsay Turner said seven cars had been entered and valuables stolen in the past week in Sawyers Bay. Most were unlocked. Valuables including cellphones and cameras were taken.
Several petrol thefts in Port Chalmers and Sawyers Bay were reported over the weekend. Snr Const Turner suspected the number of actual petrol thefts would be much higher, but people might be unaware petrol had been siphoned from their cars.
