Contractors from heritage and conservation specialists Salmond Reed Architects, of Auckland, take a close look at Dunedin's Railway Station clocktower yesterday morning.

Dunedin City Council property project manager Andy Syme said the work was part of a week-long exterior condition survey of the historic building, costing up to $26,000.

The workers would assess the condition of the stonework and mortar and check prominent building features, including ornamental stone features and parapet walls.

The results would help the council prepare a 10-year maintenance plan for the building, prioritising what work was needed, and when, for the ongoing preservation of the building, Mr Syme said.
