A South Dunedin spiritualist church has received a facelift.

Dunedin Spiritualist Church president Lisa Williams said the church moved into its Rankeilor St site in the 1990s and after more than 20 years it was in need of a new roof, replastering and new curtains.

The church had a long history in Dunedin with it coming to the city with early settlers in the 1860s; one of the oldest centres in the country.

However, practices had changed a lot in the past 150 years.

The church met every Sunday, 6pm-7.30pm to listen to a guest speaker and take part in mediumship services.

Ms Williams said mediums could communicate with spirits of people who had died.

"Our mediums that are connected with this church come together in the most loving and divine way to connect with those in spirit and give messages of love and connection to the people in the congregation," Ms Williams said.

People often found the church when they were very sad after losing a loved one.

The church supported them in their journey of grief and helped them receive messages from their lost friends and family.

She said it was a part of the vibrant community of South Dunedin and held a lot of fundraising events, contributing to local charities such as the Women’s Refuge and the Dunedin Bedding Bank.

On Sunday, everyone would be welcome to join and learn about the church if they were curious.

There would be a crystal singing bowl for the congregation to experience as well as a meditation and healing session.

"Hopefully that just allows people to come and experience the Dunedin Spiritualist Church in the fullness of what we are."
