Sports car recovered after pursuit

A sports car stolen from North Dunedin has been recovered following a police pursuit.

Senior Sergeant Phil McDouall said the 2005 Mazda RX8 was stolen about 8pm on Saturday.

The car was then involved in a police pursuit in the Pigeon Flat area, but was called off due to the "manner of driving'' in the stolen car, he said.

The Mazda was found abandoned at 7.30am yesterday at the Evansdale Glen with a blown tyre and damage to its back end.

Other vehicles were stolen in the city over the weekend, police said. They included a blue 2001 Saab hatchback from outside a house in Gladstone Rd, Northeast Valley, between 7.15pm and 9.30pm on Saturday, and a 1996 Toyota Caldina stationwagon from Leith St, North Dunedin, between 10.30pm on Saturday and 10am on Sunday.

A moped was taken overnight last Thursday from Queen St. It was later recovered on the corner of George St and Union St and had been damaged.

In other incidents, a resident in Lawrence St, Mornington, woke up to a window in their house being smashed overnight on Saturday. When the resident entered the room, a  person was seen outside running away, police said.

In Northeast Valley, a person was disturbed after trying to enter house through a bathroom window in Calder Ave about 5am on Sunday, police said.

Tools and clothing were stolen from a shipping container at Taieri Beach on Sunday, while $120 was taken from a wallet in an unlocked car in Mosgiel overnight on Saturday. Clothing was taken from a washing line in Waitati over the weekend.
