The Star, which celebrated its 40th anniversary last week, is up against community newspapers Kapiti Observer (Stuff), Taupo & Turangi Weekender (NZME), The Beacon (Beacon Publishing Group), and Wairarapa Times-Age Midweek (National Media Ltd) for the title.
It has been a successful year for Allied Press Ltd, with community newspaper titles and Otago Daily Times staff earning finalist status across a range of categories.
These include best photography - general (Stephen Jacquiery, ODT); best photography - news and/or sport (Linda Robertson, ODT); reporting - crime and/or social issues (Chris Morris, ODT); reporting - science and technology award (George Block, ODT); best individual investigation (Chris Morris, ODT); and community journalist of the year (Daisy Hudson, Mountain Scene).
The ODT website is a finalist in the best website category.
The 2019 Voyager Media Awards has named more than 280 finalists, selected from about 2000 entries by more than 70 judges based in nine countries.
The winners will be announced at a gala dinner on May 17 in Auckland.
Voyager chief executive Seeby Woodhouse said finalists hwere selected from a huge number of high-calibre entries.
‘‘It really is a testimony to the standard of news we’re lucky to have access to here in New Zealand.’’
Awards director Jane Phare said she was heartened by feedback from the judges which showed journalism in New Zealand was in good shape.
