Students to re-sit microbiology exam

Seven University of Otago students will re-sit a microbiology examination paper elsewhere in the country this week, after their answer scripts were stolen from the university Clocktower building.

Ninety-eight scripts completed by students sitting six papers were stolen in the burglary of an examination office at the Clocktower after end-of-year exams were completed, on Saturday November 7.

A university spokesman said students taking an affected second-year microbiology paper had now selected their ''preferred assessment option''.

Nine students would re-sit the examination on Friday morning - two in Dunedin, two each in Auckland and Christchurch, and a single candidate in each of Hamilton, Masterton and Porirua.

Asked if the re-sitting of exams would be largely completed over the next few weeks, the spokesman said the goal had always been to complete the examinations ''as soon as practicable''.

Good progress had been made, with arrangements completed for most students and it was expected to finalise arrangements for all students in the next couple of days.

''We are grateful for the maturity and understanding the students have displayed,'' the spokesman said.

University staff have supported affected students to consider a range of options, including re-sitting an exam, using internal assessment for a final mark, or potentially gaining an aegrotat pass.

Otago University Students' Association president Paul Hunt said a ''handful'' of affected students, perhaps about six, had approached the association's Student Support Centre seeking advice, including over the best academic options.

Overall, the association was very happy with the way the university responded and that, in most cases, flexible options had been offered for affected students, Mr Hunt said.

A 23-year-old woman is due to appear in the Dunedin District Court today on a burglary charge.
