Nine excited Dunedin Polytechnic students are jetting to China on Sunday after being selected to represent the polytechnic at Shanghai Fashion Week.

Seven fashion students will show their collections, each made up of three outfits, while two communication design students will attend and photograph the collections and the week.

The fashion students are Daniel Kwok, Simone Watson, Lucy Anderson, Jessie Wong, Duncan Chambers-Watson, Michaela Poots and Meg O'Connell and the communication design students are Laura Benjamin and Jamie Russell.

This is the third year the polytechnic has taken part in the collaboration.

The group of third-year students was selected by polytechnic staff.

Otago Polytechnic head of fashion Dr Margo Barton said the selection process was difficult because the whole class was so talented.

''They had to be quite different to each other.''

The students selected needed to be able to deliver on quality and in the time available, she said.

The students who were selected had to finish their final collections two weeks earlier than the scheduled deadline for the year, she said.

Fashion student Daniel Kwok said he was ''very excited'' to be selected.

It would be a ''great experience'', he said.

Each student was given the freedom to design whatever they wanted and it was a way to express themselves, he said.

All the students selected agreed the trip was the perfect way to end the year before returning to showcase their final collections at the Otago Polytechnic Collection show on November 21.
