Having to start classes online yesterday due to Covid-19 restrictions was no issue for University of Otago students already used to the pandemic interrupting their education.

Classes are expected to resume in person today.

Students at Cumberland College were pleased by the way the situation had been handled.

Law and arts student Eleanor White, of Wellington, said starting with distance learning was straightforward, and it was a good way to "ease into studying".

She also said they were used to online learning thanks to attending online classes last year in high school.

The college was also taking Covid-19 precautions and anyone who arrived in the city with symptoms had been required to take a test.

Ms White was among those who received a test and was required to isolate in her room for 36 hours.

"I messaged my RA [resident assistant] and they had Student Health contact me within 30 minutes."

Staff brought her meals.

"The support was really good."

Many students said they felt comfortable in the hall, as social distancing was being respected and all residents were required to fill out a health form before moving into the college.

Residents were also not allowed guests.

Dining areas had been separated by floor, and the tennis courts had been repurposed to make more space for eating.

Health science student Maddie Pinckney said restrictions were "not that bad at the moment".

Ruby Cooper said that if alert levels rose further she would want to return home to her family.
