Swim board members sought

Members are being sought for a new Dunedin Swim Coaching Board to oversee the coaching of the sport in the city.

The new board was recommended earlier this year by an independent panel that reviewed the city's swim coaching needs.

Council general manager, operations, Tony Avery said the council was seeking people who were committed to swimming and a strong, well-supported coaching programme that would be delivered by the board.

The concept of the board had been well received by the general swimming fraternity.

It was hoped decisions on members would be made before Christmas and that the new board would meet before the end of January to start the process of managing squad-based swim coaching services at Moana Pool.

It was important the board was established as quickly as possible so it could focus on appointing the coaches and implementing the other resolutions of the council, based on the independent panel's findings, Mr Avery said.

The five members of the board would be appointed on a voluntary basis.

Under the new arrangements, coaches would be employed by the board and not by the council.
