Taieri College pupils set off the metal detectors when they returned to Dunedin Airport last week after winning several medals at the New Zealand Secondary School Athletics Association national track and field championships in Hastings.

Tara McNally won silver medals in both the 80m hurdles and the junior girls 300m.

Zharna Beattie won a silver medal in the junior girls shotput and a bronze in the junior girls discus.

And Hamish Mears won a bronze medal in the senior boys shotput.

The trio were part of a team of seven athletes from Taieri College who competed at the games.

Taieri College sport co-ordinator Graeme Egan was delighted with the results.

He said the team had performed very well against a very strong field from across the country.

"Three of our students medalled at the nationals.

"Several others, including the senior girls relay team also attained personal bests in their events."
