A 19-year-old has died after the car he was in, which was carrying four others, crashed south of Dunedin early today.
The single-car crash happened on Riverside Road in the Taieri area, about 3am, Inspector Jason Guthrie said.
The five occupants were all aged in their late teens and early 20's.
The four others in the vehicle escaped without significant injury, Mr Guthrie said.
An investigation was underway into the cause of the crash and police were exploring whether alcohol or speed were factors.
Road closures were in place at the intersection of Bush Road and Riccarton Road and the intersection of Riccarton Road and School Road with the closures likely to remain throughout the morning.
