People watch from the St David St footbridge as a temporary bridge is lowered by crane across the Water of Leith.

The $110,000 bridge will be in place for about three months during the completion of flood protection works in front of the University of Otago's Registry Building.

The St David St footbridge will be taken out of commission to allow it to be extended to give the Water of Leith greater flow capacity during flooding.

University of Otago chief operating officer John Patrick said the structure made a convenient Leith crossing when students had consecutive classes on either side.

The last time the footbridge was closed for repairs the university received numerous complaints even though there are other bridges across the Leith to the north and south.
