Thursday's rainfall was heaviest this year

Dunedin had more rainfall on Thursday than any day so far this year, MetService figures show.

In the seven hours to 11pm on Thursday, there was 29.4mm of rain, which was the most rain in one event so far during January.

The only other significant rain event in Dunedin in the past month was when 14.4mm of rain fell on January 22.

Queenstown also experienced heavy rain on Thursday, recording 29.2mm in the seven hours to 2am.

The MetService expected Dunedin to be sunny and fine today, with high cloud and light southwesterlies, and a maximum temperature of 21degC forecast.

Showers were forecast for tomorrow, before clearing and southwesterlies easing, with a maximum temperature of 12degC.

Queenstown was also expecting fine conditions this weekend, with a maximum 21degC today and 20degC tomorrow.
