After last year's infamous parade, organisers canned the mass march down George St in favour of students walking to the party in the Union Hall.

Otago University Students Association events manager Vanessa Reddy was pleased with how the event went.

She described the crowd as "very sober" and "mellow".

There were some isolated reports of people throwing eggs, and Campus Constable Max Holt moved a group of about 200 students, with water bombs and eggs, from Leith St Central.

However, he was pleased with their behaviour.

"It was nice to see the senior students being so compliant.

They made some good choices," he said.
