Mosgiel cyclist Brad Evans is calling his back-to-back stage wins on the four-day Tour of Toowoomba last week the best results of his career.

The 23-year-old rides for Melbourne-based development team Pat's Veg and has been pressing his case for a full professional contract following some impressive results.

He leads the Victorian Road Series (VRS) and rose to seventh-equal in the standings for the Australian National Road (NRS) Series following his stage wins on the Tour of Toowoomba where he placed third overall.

Pat's Veg is a feeder team for Drapac Professional Cycling team and Evans has made a good impression since joining Pat's Veg in February.

His stage win on day two on the Tour of Toowoomba gave him the confidence to pull off a stunning win the following day.

In a solo effort he bridged a gap of 2min over about 20km to catch a breakaway group of 10 riders.

It was an exhausting effort but he had the reserves to go again when the group splintered.

He steeled himself for one last effort and positioned himself perfectly for the sprint to the finish.

It was the kind of effort ''which gets you noticed''.

''They were the biggest results of my career,'' he said.

''The main thing was the way I got the wins. The first win was in a reduced sprint finish with 20 guys ... and then the next day I was able to do a bit of a superman ride [to bridge the gap].

''One of my team-mates was in the breakaway group of 10 but he did not make it when the group broke up into the five. But I got on the wheel of a guy in the Avanti team who I thought would be the fastest.

''It took a big toll on me riding across ... It would not normally be my tactic but the fact I had won the day before gave me confidence.''

The NRS and VRS are in a winter break and will resume in July. Evans will soon prepare for the Tour of the Murray River, which begins on July 28.

If he can finish the NRS strongly, a contract with Drapac could be in the offing.
