The third Town Belt Traverse yesterday was the biggest so far and about 900 people walked the route from the Southern Cemetery to Woodhaugh Gardens.

Dunedin Amenities Society president Paul Pope said the event had been ''awesome''.

Calm and warm weather had helped numbers for the event, and also the Wild Dunedin Festival of Nature, of which it was a part.

Organised by the amenities society, the event was a free, self-guided walk with interpretation points designed to give the public an appreciation of the Town Belt's history and ecological importance.

At the end of the traverse at Woodhaugh Gardens, the Department of Conservation ran an Urban Nature Expo.

Mr Pope said 860 people had set off on the traverse from the Southern Cemetery, well up on the 600 at the last event in 2015, and 530 in 2013.

People joined the traverse as it went on yesterday and the number was probably closer to 900.

''People really enjoyed it. They had a great vibe,'' he said.

''The feedback we had was really positive. We didn't have any dramas, which was really nice, too.''

He was pleased the event had attracted so many people from Dunedin.

''The amenities society wants people to interact with the Town Belt. We want them to use it as a recreational space and enjoy it.

''We know that it's a special place, but we want people to share that as well.

''That's really important to us, and has been for a long time.''

Wild Dunedin convener Neil Harraway said warm weather had been a boon for the Wild Dunedin events.

A scavenger hunt for children at the Botanic Garden had attracted 300, and other events had been well attended.

''A lot for the smaller events were booked up straight away.''

The festival finishes tomorrow.
