Two people rescued from partially submerged boat

Two people were rescued off the Otago coast on Saturday morning when their boat ran into trouble.

A pair on board  Airini were rescued by crew aboard  Road Runner about 9am, shortly after making a distress call, Maritime New Zealand spokesman Mark Dittmer said.

"They radioed in to say they had lost power and were taking on water."

The pair had departed that morning from Karitane in the 5m Hartley pleasure boat.

They were taken safely to shore from the stricken vessel, which was about 12km off the coast from Karitane.

A failed attempt was made to tow the partially submerged boat.

Otago regional harbourmaster Geraint Bermingham said  yesterday it was not known where the boat was and whether it  had sunk.

The hope was it had sunk or had come ashore somewhere, otherwise it posed a navigational hazard.

A warning was in place for boat users  while the vessel remained unaccounted for.
