In an age where many children are driven to school, being able to walk or ride a scooter to school was a novelty for many pupils at Arthur Street School yesterday.

They were among more than 8500 pupils from 55 Otago schools who took part in the annual Walk n Wheel to School Week across New Zealand yesterday.

Sport Otago Walk n Wheel co-ordinator Holly Robinson said the event was designed to promote active transport for schoolchildren by encouraging them to walk, cycle, skate or scoot to school this week.

Yesterday, many schools chose to create scooter/cycle obstacle courses on school grounds, use special themes and celebrities, raise funds or use fancy dress to promote active transport.

Ms Robinson urged motorists to keep a special eye out for children making their way to school for the rest of the week, and show support to schools that are taking part in the event.

What a good idea. I always walked to school and my husband always biked. Good fun and gets you looking around, kicking the leaves and getting the wind in your hair. A great unwind and chat time with friends. Better than the back of a car and less polluting too.
