Warm weather to give way to cold winds, snow on hills

Warm weather this weekend will give way to cold winds and snow on the hills early next week, MetService says.

''It looks like, on Sunday [tomorrow], we've got a pretty warm day, ahead of this front that comes through on Monday,'' MetService meteorologist Peter Little said.

The forecast high for Dunedin on Monday was

20degC with a 6degC low, while Queenstown was expected to reach 16degC with a 3degC low.

Alexandra was also forecast to reach a 3degC low, but with an 18degC high.

Snow was forecast to fall to 600m on Monday night and Tuesday morning, with possible flurries ''a little bit lower''.

''It's not really going to be a big snow event,'' Mr Little said.

The dramatic change in weather over the weekend and into next week was ''very typical for this time of year'', he said.

''We often see quite wild swings of temperature.''

But ''the main thing for the weekend, is generally, the weather is looking pretty good''.
