Weekend to be warmer

While Dunedin shivered in temperatures which barely reached 12degC yesterday, today should be much warmer, MetService says.

The cool, breezy weather which moved up the country yesterday was expected to fade away as the weekend begins, meteorologist Dan Corbett said.

''This will be a decent weekend for outdoor plans with good fine spells, but a bit of wet weather will creep into the far south for the second half of the weekend.''

In Dunedin, the temperature was expected to get to 18degC today and be fine with some cloud. Similar conditions were expected inland, where temperatures should rise to the mid-20s.

The wet weather in southern parts of the South Island on Sunday would come from another front moving up the country.

It could briefly bring a few heavy bursts of rain to the far southwest, along with strengthening winds across the alpine ridge tops, he said.

In Dunedin it was expected to arrive in the afternoon but temperatures were still expected to be about 18degC.
