Otago Girls' High School year 9 pupils (from left) Hannah King (13), Sarah McNaughton (13), Bethany Astwood (13), Tamara Teata (12) and Emily Finnie (13) with principal Linda Miller prepare to eat cupcakes and drink pink lemonade during the school's inaugural Victorian Garden Party yesterday.
Mrs Miller said it was an initiative aimed at welcoming year 9 pupils to their first day of school at Otago Girls' as well as helping them adjust to their new surroundings.
Pupils built up an appetite by taking part in traditional picnic games, including sack races and egg and spoon races.
Mrs Miller said the girls were the latest cohort of about 23,000 pupils to have gone through the school since it opened in 1871.
