An elderly woman died in a Dunedin supermarket car park yesterday.
Emergency services were called to Centre City New World, in Great King St, following reports of a car crash, about 2pm.
Acting Inspector Kelvin Lloyd, of Dunedin, said a small fire was put out in the vehicle by passers-by, after the car struck a wall of the underground park.
The elderly female driver was found unconscious. St John staff were unable to revive her, he said.
Her death has been referred to the coroner.
