An 18-year-old woman suffered a broken arm and leg injuries when she was hit by a truck near Palmerston this morning.
The crash happened on State Highway 85 near the town, 50km north of Dunedin, about 7.10am.
Inspector Murray Hurst of police southern communications said the woman had been on the road when she was hit by a truck.
"I don't know if she was hitchhiking or on a push-bike or anything, but she was on the road and got hit," he said.
"She suffered a broken arm and leg injuries."
A rescue helicopter had been sent to the scene.
Diversions for light traffic were in place while the crash scene was under investigation.
