Woman punched, thrown from bike

Police are appealing for two good Samaritans who helped a cyclist violently attacked on Portsmouth Dr in Dunedin to come forward.

The 45-year-old woman was heading to Portobello yesterday when accosted by a stranger close to The Molars sculpture near the intersection of Strathallan St about 3.30pm. 

Police said the man shouted at her before grabbing the bike. The woman was punched about four times and thrown onto the grass verge. She has minor injuries.

Her screaming alerted two men in a nearby parked car, who came to her aid. The attacker then ran off towards the wharf. 

Police would like to speak with these good Samaritans, described as both Caucasian and thought to be aged their mid-20s.

The man who attacked the woman was described as Caucasian and aged in his 40s.

He was of solid build, with unkempt, shoulder-length sandy blonde hair, and was clean shaven.

He was wearing light coloured T-shirt, with a large logo or picture on the front and blue jeans.
