A surfer heads to sea as contractors pour the start of a new beach access beside the St Clair Hot Salt Water Pool yesterday.

The Dunedin City Council revealed it would build the new stairs to access St Clair Beach following the destruction of current stairs by high tides.

Council transport group manager Jeanine Benson said the council had discussions with various groups, including the St Clair Action Group, the St Clair Surf Club, Long Dog Cafe and Aukaha, who had input into the design.

Surfers at St Clair often accessed the water by existing stairs from The Esplanade, which could be dangerous during large swells and high tide, Ms Benson said.

The new concrete stairs were being made off-site and were expected to be completed by the end of this month.

They were a $230,000 portion of the St Clair-St Kilda Coastal Plan, adopted by the council earlier this year, she said.
