In January she travelled to Wanganui to participate in the North Island Colgate championships where she finished third in the shot put and the 80m hurdles. At the South Island Colgate championships, Yvonne jumped a massive 5.23m to secure the gold medal in the long jump. She also gained silver medals in the shot put and the 80m hurdles along with bronze in the discus. Yvonne was awarded the Nick Willis South Island scholarship for her efforts.
Year 9 pupil George Davies has been selected in the Southland A under-15 cricket team. Troy McIvor and Sam Calder are in the Southland B under-15 team.
Year 10 pupil Georgia Heffernan was selected in the Otago under-21 cricket side to play at the nationals in December. She was the youngest player at the tournament and took the most wickets for Otago - seven in total. Twin sister Kate was selected to play in Christchurch as a member of a combined Otago-Nelson team. Georgia and Kate Heffernan, along with Taylah Dawson-Tait, were selected in the Otago under-15 team which travelled to Wanganui in January. It defeated Auckland and Canterbury and was fourth overall. Georgia was named bowler of the tournament for taking 12 wickets.
Gold medal for McGlashan pupil
Joe Beamish won gold at the New Zealand secondary schools athletic championships in the senior boys 3000m steeplechase. Oli Chignell was third in the road race at the same event, in Hamilton in late December. Alex Hanan won gold in the light bantamweight division at the New Zealand boxing championships also in Hamilton. The JMC First XI has won eight of its past nine games and has won promotion to the senior reserve grade. Captain Josh Preston leads the batting with an average of more than 50. The top wicket-taker is James Logie.
JMC rowers won three medals at recent South Island camp. Tom Grave and Harry Hasselman won bronze in the under-16 double sculls. Tom also won bronze in the single sculls. The under-15 eight also took home bronze.
The senior tennis side (Carlos Reid and Paddy Ou) has again won qualification to the South Island championships with a convincing win at the Otago qualifiers. Gene Turner, Max Gomez and Nathan Wolf have been selected for the Otago under-14 water polo side. Nathan also recently attended the South Island surf championships where he picked up five medals.
King's High School
On the back of the recent success of old boys Otago players Bradley Scott and Brad Rodden, and
the McCullum brothers, who have been playing for the Black Caps, cricket at King's has a real buzz about it. The First XI has played four games in the senior reserve competition. The highlights have been Taylor Cumberland's 186 against Taieri and Eamon O'Brien's six-wicket bag in the same match. Kings amassed 351 for eight in its 50 overs before bowling Taieri out for 98.
On the representative front, congratulations for recent selections go to Felix Page (Otago under-19), Joel Meade and Taylor Cumberland (Otago under-17), and Patrick Arnold (Otago under-15). The King's High School junior boys triathlon team of Tame Govaerts (swim), Malachi Buschl (run), and Zac Mason (cycle) claimed first place at the Otago-Southland triathlon. After an impressive fifth at the national secondary schools touch tournament, King's High year 13 student Taylor Haugh was selected in the NZ under-17 team.
Year 10 student Josh Duff was also selected in the NZ under-15 team and will travel to the Gold Coast in late August.
Logan Park High School
Standout basketball player for Logan Park, Jaren Roy travelled to Australia with the New Zealand Koru tour under-16 boys development squad in January. His team competed against Australian Country teams in Albury-Wodonga.
There were two New Zealand squads at this competition. Jaren said his team did well to finish fifth. His team was the better of the two NZ squads.
Taieri College
The close links between the school and the Taieri Athletic club continue to show dividends with 12 school records broken across seven events. The record-breakers were: Hamish Mears (under-13 100m, shot put, discus), Hannah Ashton (under-13 100m, high jump), Ciara Lawlor (under-13 shot put), Ben Hackfath (under-12 400m), Cameron O'Connell (under-12 800m), Hayden Butcher (under-12 1500m), Zharna Beattie (under-12 discus), Tara McNally (under-12 75m). Congratulations to Celine Timoko for her recent selection for Otago to attend the national touch tournament. Taieri College entered a team into each of the under-14, under-16 and under-18 grades of the Burger King 3 on 3 basketball competition.
The under-14 team (Jacob Woodcock, Matthew Miller and Josh Glennie) won its division as did the under-16 team (Mat Crammond, Callum Ballantyne, Adam Greer and Jordan Bell).
Roxburgh Area School
Amelia Pasco and Jonty McKinnel were the senior swimming champions and Graeme Frame and Emma Lennon the senior athletic champions. The triathlon was won by Jonty McKinnel and Briana Forbes. The highlight of the past few weeks was the mixed team of Amelia Pasco, Jack Lennon and Anton Fitzgerald winning the Otago-Southland triathlon in Cromwell. Other good performances were achieved by Jonty in the Individual senior boys section and the junior girls team and junior boys team.
East Otago
Paige, Sam, Renae and Jamie Church spent a good part of the school holidays in the North Island and upper South Island competing in rodeos. Sam was competing for the NZ high school team at the three Far North rodeos and his successes contributed to NZ beating Australia by 40 points. Renae placed in most of the rodeos in the junior barrel race and will be competing in this at the national finals in Wanaka along with sister Jamie.
At the school athletics day, three school records were broken and 34 students qualified for the Otago secondary schools championships in more than 60 events.
East Otago had three teams enter the Otago-Southland secondary schools triathlon in Cromwell. Our most successful team of James Bungard and Olivia Ollerenshaw was second in the senior mixed grade and 14th overall. The East Otago First XI cricket team has had a successful start to its Gillette Cup campaign with wins over Logan Park High School and Tokomairiro High School. Standout performers were Andrew Grubb with the bat and Ethan Simpson with the ball.
St Hilda's success
Last December the St Hilda's cricket and touch teams competed at their respective national tournaments.
The First XI cricket team was second at the NZCT tournament in Palmerston North and the touch team ninth at the national secondary school tournament in Papakura.
Seven St Hilda's athletes competed in the national secondary school athletics n Hamilton. Caitlyn George won bronze medals in the junior 100m and 200m. Meg McKay won a silver medal in the senior high jump. The junior relay team of Caitlyn George, Aria Park, Hayley Shallard and Caity Kenny won a gold medal in the 4x100m relay. Meg McKay was was named in the NZSS athletic association paper team.
At the St Hilda's athletics day at the Caledonian Ground, the following records were broken: Libby Jones (senior discus), Caity Kenny (senior high jump), Millie Scully (yr 7-8 50m, 100m, 200m 400m sprints). Abbey Johnston and Paige Thomson, members of the Otago under-15 mixed touch team, have been selected in the New Zealand under-15 mixed team and Libby van Harselaar has been selected in the New Zealand under-14 water polo team.
Dunstan success
Five school records were set on athletics day by Adriana Mawhinney (senior girls triple jump and high jump), Jayden McLew (senior boys triple jump), Ryan Shields (under-14 boys 3000m), Chris Hill (junior boys 3000m) and Simone Keane (senior girls discuss). The athletics champions for 2014 were Matt Langley (under-14 boys), Chris Hill (junior boys), Cole Wilson (intermediate boys), Jayden McLew (senior boys), Ella Creagh and Fuki Baker (junior girls), Kia Wales (intermediate girls) and Adriana Mawhinney and Stacey Dennison (senior girls).
The swimming champions for 2014 were Hannah Begg (junior girls), Ryan Shields (junior boys), Sydney Cook (intermediate girls), Campbell Pearson (intermediate boys), Emma Dick (senior girls) and Sam McCulloch and Josh O'Donnell-Fluit (senior boys).
The Dunstan First XI has progressed to the next round of the Gillette Cup when it will play John McGlashan College, after victories over Roxburgh Area School and Wakatipu High School.
Three pupils competed in the Otago secondary schools triathlon and multisport event in Cromwell last week. They were Kia Wales (multisport first place in junior girls, fifth overall, time 1.08.48), Tim McGimpsey (multisport first place in junior boys, ninth overall, time 1.25.31) and Sam McCulloch (multisport first in senior boys, first overall, time 1.02.50).
Otago Girls'
Ilana Goosens was selected for the Otago tennis squad and Eliza Booth, Amelia King and Brooke Miller as members of the Otago age-group tennis teams. Karley Wilden-Palms gained a gold medal in the women's club single and a silver medal in the under-17 girls' singles at the South Island rowing championships. She was also fifth in the girls under-17 coxed quad sculls A final along with Georgia de Raad, Juliett Alm-Lequeux, Ellie Murphy and cox Daniela Lemow. Shayla Rowley has been selected for the international softball academy under-15 girls development team and Tayla MacDonald is a member of the Otago secondary schools cricket team. Jade Middleditch has been invited back to the National Talent Centre for football.
Kiana Pelasio was selected for the New Zealand under-17 girls touch team for the second year running. She was a member of the Otago Girls' senior A touch team that recently beat St Hilda's to qualify for the South Island tournament in Christchurch on March 29-30. At the recent Otago-Southland multisport-triathlon championships in Cromwell, the Otago Girls' senior girls multisport team of Melanie Paddon, Juliette McMullan, and Juliette Lequex won its section while Natasha White won the senior girls' multisport individual section.
The annual sports day was held in February.
The overall athletic champions at each year level were: year 9 Hannah King, year 10 Jade Middleditch, year 11 Emma Ward, year 12 Sydney Evans-Tobata and year 13 Brigid O'Neill.
Kaikorai Valley touch
The Kaikorai Valley College senior mixed touch team competed in the Otago secondary schools touch championships on February 22. The team went undefeated until the final against South Otago when it lost by a point. It qualifies for the South Island secondary schools championships on March 29-30 in Christchurch. The next big event on the school`s calendar is the annual 1000k challenge. The day kicks off with a fun run involving the whole school walking/running down Kaikorai Valley Rd from Stone St to Kenmure Rd. Students are divided into groups with each group participating in at least eight different activities during the day. Twenty-seven different sports/activities are stationed around the school. Activities range from the traditional sports such as netball, rugby,cricket etc to activities such as la crosse, fishing, petanque and rock climbing.
