London's mystery solved

12AM, August 7, 1888: Jack, a tall, lean man in black pants, black shirt and a green velvet jacket was taking a midnight stroll to Gorge Yard.

As he walked, he watched flames in the gas lamps cast shadows that danced and swirled on the walls of the buildings and cobbled streets of London.

Meanwhile, Martha Turner waited for her next client to turn up.

When Jack arrived through the smoke, he spotted the small, plump woman with the lantern, alone on one of the landings.

His hazelnut eyes immediately lit up as he thought, ''easy prey''.

He moved through the smoke with an airy gliding motion, then emerged about 10m away from her.

Martha turned to the strange man as he moved towards her.

He stopped on the edge of the light so that his face remained shadowed and hidden from view.

He took a step forward to reveal deathly pale skin and narrow check bones.

Martha yelled at him: ''Who are you and what do you want?''

But he replied with only a smile.

It was then that she saw the two razor-sharp teeth protruding from his upper jaw. She screamed. With a graceful motion, he leaped at her, knocking the lamp from her hand so that it hit the ground and shattered.

Shards of glass went flying.

Jack then sank his needle-like teeth into her carotid artery.

His mouth filled with bitter, salty, and metallic blood. He gulped it down in a hurry, then pulled out a striped handkerchief to wipe from his lips the scarlet blood.

He walked away, leaving Martha's frail corpse in a pool of blood and glass.
