91-year-old assaulted in home invasion

A 91-year-old woman has been assaulted in a home invasion in the Auckland suburb of Mt Wellington.

The woman returned to her home in the Mountain Rd area with her daughter about 3.30pm yesterday. The pair had been shopping.

Two men appeared at the front door. One of the men said the pair were lost and asked for directions.

He then entered the house and assaulted the elderly woman, pushing her to the floor.

She knocked the back of her head on the ground.

When her daughter ran to her aid, the offenders grabbed the victim's purse and handbag.

Both men then fled.

Police were called and officers "flooded the area", but the pair were not found.

The woman suffered a head injury and was in hospital overnight.

"This is a deplorable attack on a vulnerable person," Detective Senior Sergeant Glenn Baldwin said.

"Our elderly have the right to feel safe in their own homes without the fear of something like this happening.

"I want to reassure the community that we are doing everything possible to catch these offenders.''

Detectives were in the Mountain Rd area this morning, going door to door, asking for information.

The pair are believed to have been driving a metallic blue sedan which was possibly lowered with a loud exhaust and of a similar shape to a Nissan Skyline.
