Air Force catering staff to strike over wages

Catering workers at the Royal New Zealand Air Force (RNZAF) Ohakea defence base near Palmerston North plan to strike tomorrow over wages.

Service and Food Workers Union (SFWU) organiser Sam Jones said the workers had been unable to reach an agreement with their employer Compass Group PLC after six months of negotiations.

The strike action followed a 24-hour work stoppage on Monday, he said.

SFWU organiser Linda Deans said Compass had offered the workers $13 an hour but only to staff who had not had an increase in the last 12 months.

"That still compares miserably with the wages paid to hospital catering staff who are on $14.62 an hour."

No one from Compass Group was available for comment.
