All urban Whanganui roads open

All urban roads in the Whanganui district are open after flooding.

The only sections of road under the district council authority closed are No 3 Line from the urban boundary to Kaimatira Road, Matahiwi Track (about 800m from Whanganui River Road) and Ahu Ahu Valley Road (last 3km).

On June 22, after the floods and slips 79 per cent or 488km of district roads were closed.

Four-wheel drive access only remains on Junction Road, Kauarapaoa Road, Creek Road, Kaukatea Valley Road, Bruce Road and Matahiwi Track (first 800m only then rest of road is closed).

All other roads in the district are now open and available to 2WD, cars etc. Truck and trailer contractors, wishing to gain access to rural roads, should contact the Roading Alliance on 027 444 8346 for an update.

Users should be aware roads will be slippery if there is any significant rain and must be driven with extreme care.

Ruapehu District Council advises that the Raetihi-Pipiriki Road is still under significant flood damage and the route from Pipiriki south on the Whanganui River Road remains closed.

The Parapara, or SH4 between Wanganui and Raetihi remains closed.

While roads are open, the council still has thousands of slips, washouts and dropouts to deal with before all roads are returned to their previous state.

In urban Wanganui, it's expected they will be fixed within a year. The majority of the repairs will be in the coming summer months.

The rural area will take longer but it's expected to have this work complete within three years.
