Police are negotiating with a man in possession of a firearm, in East Auckland.
An address at The Esplanade, Eastern Beach has been cordoned off.
The Armed Offenders Squad and a negotiation team are currently speaking with the man, police have said.
Police said the man was not a threat to the public, but access is blocked near the address.
Eastern Beach resident Robert Elms, who owns a business on The Esplanade, said he was at William Green soccer grounds at about 5.30pm with his kids when he saw "about half a dozen" cop cars scream past.
He said he wasn't sure if it was related to the gunman, as the park was about about a five minute drive away from the area.
