Auckland AOS standoff ends peacefully

Police have arrested a man who was holed up at a property in east Auckland this morning, peacefully ending a 13-hour stand-off.

The man reportedly had a gun and had barricaded himself in a shed in Eastern Beach at 7pm yesterday.

The man had agreed to give himself up at 8.30am after police fired tear gas into the shed.

One News reported that the 38-year-old man was wanted in connection to an incident at the weekend.

The Armed Offenders' Squad had cordoned off the property and officers had been negotiating with the man.

Police had said the man was not a threat to the public.

Inspector Chris Robinson said before the arrest there was no hurry. "It's just a matter of wait and see now," Mr Robinson said. "It could take a little bit longer but we'll just have to do our best."

Immediate neighbours had been evacuated.

Eastern Beach resident Robert Elms, who owns a business on The Esplanade, said he was at William Green soccer grounds at about 5.30pm with his kids when he saw "about half a dozen" cop cars scream past.
