Auckland artists to the fore at awards

Auckland artists almost made a clean sweep of the 18th Wallace Trust Art Awards in Auckland last night.

Dunedin sculptor Philip Jarvis was the only non-Auckland artist to win a prize at New Zealand's premier annual art awards.

A photographic diptych by Marcus Williams and Susan Jowsey, The Correction, won the Wallace Trust Paramount Award first prize of a six-month residency at the International Studio and Curatorial Programme in New York.

The Kaipara Foundation Wallace Trust Award was awarded to Linden Simmons; the Fulbright Wallace Arts Trust Award to Richard Maloy; and the Parklane Wallace Trust Development Award to Chloe Marsters.

The first runner-up award went to Matt Arbuckle and second runner-up award to Jarvis, who won $2000.

The Wallace Art Awards offers more than $150,000 in prizes and is regarded as the most prestigious annual art prize in New Zealand.

The awards are given for contemporary New Zealand painting, sculpture, drawing and photography to encourage the visual arts in New Zealand and reward artists who are producing outstanding work.

More than 450 entries were judged by Philip Trusttum, Chris Braddock and Rohan Wealleans.
