Aucklanders warned wild weather on way

Aucklanders have been warned to brace for a deluge of rain this afternoon with the risk of tornadoes and thunderstorms.

WeatherWatch.co.nz said a band of heavy rain was moving in this afternoon and estimated the heaviest falls would come between 3pm and 5pm in Auckland city.

The live Lightning Tracker showed most thunderstorms lay just west of Auckland and Northland early this afternoon.

The forecaster said there was a risk of localised flash flooding and surface flooding in Auckland and surrounding areas but major flooding was not expected.

The front would also bring a moderate risk of waterspouts and tornadoes.

Motorists were advised to drive with headlights on and be aware of sudden downpours that could cause very limited visibility.

Auckland residents were advised to stay indoors until the front passed.
